Ace Your Interview: Insider Tips from the Experts

Congratulations on getting an interview!

We know it's an exciting yet nerve-wracking time. To give you an edge, Middleton Jones has compiled these insider tips gathered from our experience in the recruitment field:

Preparation is Key:

Company Deep Dive:  Beyond the website, delve into the company's social media, recent press releases, and project portfolios. Understanding their values and current focus will help you tailor your answers.

Industry Update: Building regulations and technologies are constantly evolving. Brush up on the latest developments, including sustainability initiatives and new construction methods.

Showcase Your Strengths:

Go Beyond the Basics:  Instead of listing skills on your CV, discuss real-world examples of how you've applied those skills. Did you identify a hidden structural issue? Did you negotiate a cost-saving measure on a project? Did you bring on a new client? These stories will make you memorable.

Technical Expertise: Be ready to discuss specific software you're proficient in (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit). Highlight any relevant qualifications, certifications or training you've completed recently.

Master the Art of Communication:

Clear and Concise: Practice explaining technical concepts in a way that a non-expert can understand. This shows your ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.

Ask Engaging Questions: Prepare insightful questions that demonstrate your knowledge and interest in the company's work. These questions could be about a specific project or their approach to certain industry challenges.

Presentation Matters:

Dress for Success: While some industries might be more relaxed than others, err on the side of professionalism. A well-groomed appearance shows respect and attention to detail.

Body Language:  Maintain good eye contact, offer a firm handshake, and project enthusiasm. Non-verbal cues speak volumes about your confidence and engagement.

Leave a Lasting Impression:

Thank-You Note:  A personalised email or note expressing your gratitude goes a long way. Reiterate your interest in the role and briefly mention a key point from your conversation that resonated with you.

Remember, the interview is a two-way street. It's your chance to assess if the company is the right fit for you. Relax, be yourself, and let your passion shine through.
